Have you ever been sick and felt like you will never better-not sick? The kind of sick that has you really discouraged, feeling like it will never end?
There is hope for being better - not sick.
There is an ancient text which says
How you think and what you believe - that true deep-down belief affects you more than you might ever imagine and can affect whether you stay better-not sick.
During the 1990s, I started getting sick. And staying sick. I came across a book in a book store called "Spontaneous Healing" by Dr. Andrew Weil. I thought "Huh?" Having a Christian background, I was used to the idea that "sometimes God heals", but Dr. Weil was saying that healing is something that everyone can access.
Of course, not everyone sees things the way he does, so who should I listen to - the ones who say it can't be true and are still sick, or the ones who say you can get better - and they did! I know this one thing - if you think you can't get better, you won't pay any attention to someone who says you can, and shows you how to do it. But if you become even a little bit hopeful, just maybe you'll listen to the ones who got better and find something that works for you.
Well, I devoured the book on my holidays, amazed at the healing stories that he sprinkles throughout. I should add here that I wasn't the only one sick in my family. My oldest daughter became ill with chronic fatigue and it was difficult to find doctors at the time who knew anything about it and who didn't secretly roll their eyes at this supposedly all-in-your-mind illness. Half a year later, the flu went rolling through the household, and my youngest daughter got sicker than everyone else, she was sicker longer than everyone else, and then she just didn't get better. According to the specialist that we eventually saw, this was a "typical presentation", the Epstein Barr virus getting hold of a person during a viral illness.
I had to do something.
At the time, my husband was in business and was going to business networking meetings once a week. He came home one day and said that someone was there who I would be interested in meeting. She was a nutritionist who had intended to go to a different networking function and had ended up at this one "by accident".
Long story short - we hired her and she introduced us to the idea that what we eat really does make a difference to our health.
After that I took my oldest daughter to a naturopath; she credits him with getting her through university without crashing. She has continued on a healthy path; it is habit by now, she eats right, monitors her stress levels and is loving her life.
We were also seeing a chiropractor who introduced me to an author named Louise Hay. She has this (crazy?) idea that our emotions and thought patterns actually cause our disease - rather than our physical bodies being something completely separate from our mind and soul.
If you think that's a bit of a crazy thought, that's ok, I did too. But I was intrigued enough to read her book, and observation of myself and others substantiated that what she said was true. It is really important how we think, and then our emotions follow our thoughts. As she puts it in her book, if I think "Everybody is out to get me", I'm going to feel very differently and have a totally different day than if I think "Everyone around me is loving and helpful."
I love these two books; they've been around a little while now, but I still recommend you read them. You won't be sorry.
Accurate information is key. You need to have the facts and you need to know what works. As it says in another ancient writing
Or I might say "We are destroyed for lack of knowledge of how to stay better-not sick. Search for knowledge. Look at opposing viewpoints. Read and be inspired by others' personal healing stories of how they became better-not sick.
I am not a medical professional. I am a mom and now a grandma who used to have health challenges but now is feeling better all the time. I had children with chronic illnesses and have some idea of what is needed for healing long term. Sometimes it is through trial and error, i.e. "Does it work or not?" Sometimes it involves moving past the "naysayers" and trusting yourself.
I am not here to tell you what to do or to pretend to give medical advice. But I'm pretty good at finding information from those who who are qualified and passing it on. As you roam around the site, it is my hope that you find something that will help you in your journey to be better-not sick.
(And don't forget, a little common sense goes a long way :)
